Presidents Medal Sigma

The 2009 recipient of the President's Medal, Professor Richard Harvey, Victor Chang, pictured above with Professor Edna Hardeman, President and Simon Giulliano of Sigma-Aldrich (sponsors).

The President’s Medal Plenary Address:

Renowned developmental biologist and Australia Fellow, Professor Richard Harvey, was awarded the ANZSCDB Medal in December 2009 at the ComBio meeting in Christchurch. This prestigious Medal adds to an impressive career-long list of hon-ours and awards for Ruchard Harvey, including a prestigious Australia Fellowship earlier in the year from the NHMRC. Richard’s achievements represent not only years of hard work and scientific success, but also the breadth of peer recognition bestowed on one of our pioneers of molecular and developmental cardiology.

Medal History

In 2002, the ANZSCDB inaugurated a special award to recognise excellence in the fields of Cell and Developmental Biology. The first 7 medals were struck at the Perth Mint. The second set of medals was struck at the Royal Australian Mint, Canberra.

The award consists of a pure silver medal (5cm in diameter) to be presented annually at the COMBIO conference, the combined meeting of the ANZSCDB, the Australian Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and the Australian Society of Plant Scientists.

The Medal features an elegant embossed design by Professor Nadia Rosenthal (a muscle stem cell biologist and talented artist) that encapsulates the cellular, genetic, organismal and model systems bases of the disciplines of the Society and the countries represented. The awarding of the Medal is accompanied by a Plenary lecture from the recipient at the annual COMBIO conference.
