    PhD Scholarships

The Neurodegeneration and Repair Laboratory is seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic postgraduate student for the following project in 2011:

Neuronal Development – Dr. Thomas Fath

Title: The actin cytoskeleton in neuronal development and network formation

The project aims to understand how neurons in the central nervous system are able to build a complex network of communicating cells which provides the fundamental basis of all higher functions of the brain. Previous research, including work from our group, has shown that the actin cytoskeleton is instrumental in supporting neurite elongation and branch formation. A wide range of cell culture and transgenic mouse models that we have established in our laboratory and in which we can manipulate dynamic and structural properties of the actin filament system allow us to investigate the molecular mechanisms that are involved in building the complex structure of the brain.

Techniques used: Cultures of cell lines and primary mouse neuron; Immunocytochemistry; Fluorescence/Live cell Microscopy; Proteomics (LC-MS/MS, iTRAQ); Biochemical Assays

Award:The scholarship is valued at $25,000 per annum (tax exempt) and may be renewed for up to three years, subject to satisfactory progress.

Eligibility:All applicants must hold an honours degree or equivalent in a related biological science (eg. Biochemistry, Physiology, Pathology, Pharmacology) and be Australian or New Zealand citizens or Australian permanent resident. Applicants should have a particular interest in the project on offer and ideally have some experience in cell culture and molecular biology techniques. The Award will be based on standard APA guidelines.

Applicants should include the following documents:

    • Cover Letter

    • Curriculum Vitae

    • Copy of an academic transcript

    • Names and contact details for at least 2 referees

All applications should be emailed to Dr Thomas Fath (t.fath@unsw.edu.au).
